Carnegie Mellon University scientists are training a computer to decode the human mind.
"Imagine somebody who is completely immobilized, a quadriplegic, who can't talk," said co-author Marcel Just, a neuroscientist and director of CMU's Center for Cognitive Brain Imaging. "They could think a thought and maybe the machine could figure out what it is."
The work expands on a separate study the same team published earlier this year showing that people's brains activate similarly when they think about the same word.

British lawmakers voted on Monday to approve controversial plans to allow the use of human-animal hybrid embryos for stem cell research.
Prime Minister Brown has said he believes scientists seeking to use human-animal hybrid embryos to treat diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's are on a moral mission to improve and possibly save millions of lives.
But opposition Conservative lawmaker Edward Leigh said "In many ways we are like children playing with land mines without any concept of the dangers of the technology that we are handling."

Scientists said Tuesday they had "resurrected" a gene from the extinct Tasmanian tiger by implanting it in a mouse, raising the future possibility of bringing animals such as dinosaurs back to life.
Why? Isn't extinction God's way of saying "next?"

The El Nino phenomenon that has puzzled climate scientists in recent decades may have assisted the first trip around the world nearly 500 years ago.
Ferdinand Magellan was seeking the so-called spice islands, now part of Indonesia, and his course took him north of that goal.
But the route may have been dictated by mild conditions and favorable winds during an El Nino, anthropologists Scott M. Fitzpatrick of North Carolina State University and Richard Callaghan of the University of Calgary, Canada, propose in a new study of his trip.

The Steel City and the City of Brotherly Love get along as well as a Pat's Cheesesteak does with a Primanti sammitch. And that ain't too well.
